South Florida Teen Overcomes Scoliosis with Spinal Fusion Surgery at Holtz Children’s Hospital

Khloe Lastra was getting a routine screening from her school nurse when it was discovered she had scoliosis, a curve in her spine.
The 12-year-old was a healthy and happy girl who enjoyed dancing, modeling, acting, and swimming until she received her diagnosis. Her pediatrician referred her to a pediatric orthopedic specialist, so her parents sought out expert care at Holtz Children’s Hospital.
In March 2024, they were introduced to Brian Grottkau, MD, chief of pediatric orthopedics and pediatric surgical services at Holtz Children’s, and Shriners Children’s endowed chair in pediatric orthopedics at University of Miami Miller School of Medicine.
During her first visit, Dr. Grottkau educated Khloe and her parents, Nichole and Jaime Lastra, both Jackson Health System employees, on what scoliosis is, the treatment options available to her, and what her recovery would look like. He explained that a spinal fusion would be the most effective treatment plan for Khloe since she had a 63-degree curvature of the spine and only a bit of growth left.
A spinal fusion is an operation that permanently joins two or more vertebrae in the spine. It allows for correction of the spine’s rotation, but limits mobility and flexibility.
“Khloe was excited because Dr. Grottkau made her well aware of what was going on and what to expect,” Nichole Lastra said. “This made me feel confident as a mom, and helped put some of my nerves at ease. Dr. Grottkau did a great job of educating her and empowering her to make her own decisions when it comes to her body.”
On September 10, 2024, Khloe underwent a successful spinal fusion. The procedure allowed Dr. Grottkau to protect Khloe’s lumbar motion, which is the most important motion for normal spinal function.
“There wasn’t a minute where I doubted the care she was going to receive,” Jaime Lastra said. “I’ve worked for Jackson for more than 31 years, so I know the miracles they perform every day. We knew the surgery was going to be a success and she was going to receive excellent care.”
After the surgery, Khloe recovered at Holtz Children’s, where she received physical, occupational, and even pet therapy. She’s looking forward to returning to performing arts camp and swimming as soon as she’s able.
“Dr. Grottkau completely wooed us off our feet from the first time we met him,” Nichole Lastra said. “We can’t thank him enough for making us feel at ease and making this such a positive experience for all of us. He has a permanent seat at the table at our house.”
