Description

For patients with spina bifida or spinal cord birth defects, hospital-based care is a regular part of life, and comprehensive, compassionate care is the key to a successful future. Our goal is to strengthen your child and help them lead as independent a life as possible.

Located in downtown Miami, our Comprehensive Spina Bifida Program begins with an in-depth, thorough evaluation, followed by the creation of a plan for long-term management of infants, children, and teens with spina bifida and spinal cord injuries.

All Your Child’s Care, in One Location

The Comprehensive Spina Bifida Program is organized so that your child can be seen by several specialists in one visit, all in the same location. After each visit, your child’s medical team discusses their evaluation and creates a plan for continuing care.

Our compassionate, integrated team of experts addresses the needs of each child, from neurosurgical and urological treatment to dietary and transitional care.

A Lifetime of Care

Most of our patients will be with us throughout their childhood, and both children and caregivers will appreciate the program’s child-friendly, family-friendly environment. This includes a focus on the whole child, with help planning well visits and vaccinations, assistance obtaining physical and occupational therapy, support with social or behavioral challenges, and assistance meeting all of your child’s developmental needs.

As your child grows into a young adult, the spina bifida team at Holtz Children’s will help them transition to adult care with Jackson’s resident experts.

Our Comprehensive Spina Bifida Program team includes pediatric experts from the following disciplines:

  • Pediatric neurosurgery
  • Pediatric urology
  • Pediatric orthopedics
  • Nephrology
  • Orthotics
  • Physical therapy and rehabilitation
  • Dietary services
  • Psychology and social work specialists
  • Pediatric Internal Medicine

About Spina Bifida

Spina bifida is a birth defect in which an area of the spinal column doesn’t form properly, leaving a section of spinal cord and spinal nerves exposed through an opening in the back. This neurological condition affects an estimated 1,500 babies each year in the U.S.

Children with spina bifida condition often experience urological issues such as bladder and bowel dysfunction, as well as orthopedic malformations or neurological problems.

Prenatal Consultation

Spina bifida is one of the most common types of neural tube defect, and affects seven out of 10,000 live births in the U.S. each year. Typically detected during pregnancy, accurate diagnosis is essential in planning adequate treatment.

The spina bifida multidisciplinary team partners with our network of maternal fetal medicine physicians to conduct prenatal consultations. Further testing includes:

  • Maternal MRIs
  • Amniocentesis
  • Genetic counseling
  • Prenatal ultrasounds
  • Blood tests

Expectant mothers can count on the support of one of the nation’s most experienced medical teams who work with a full range of therapies. Learn more about fetal care and high-risk maternal-fetal medicine at Jackson Health System.

Spina Bifida Neonatal Care

Holtz Children’s Hospital is home to one of the largest and most advanced neonatal intensive care units (NICU) in the state of Florida, and is designated as a Regional Perinatal Intensive Care Center by the state. As a Level IV NICU, a full-service medical staff is available 24 hours a day. In collaboration with the medical team of the Comprehensive Spina Bifida Program, neonatal experts support the creation of a coordinated care plan for each newborn.
