Autism-Friendly Pediatric Emergency Departments at UHealth Jackson Children’s Care Hospitals

Committed to giving everyone in our community the care they need.

Logo that reads Autism Friendly

At UHealth Jackson Children’s Care pediatric emergency departments, we are committed to providing exceptional care to every child in our community, including those with autism and related disabilities. We understand that medical treatment can be a stressful and anxiety-inducing experience, especially for individuals with sensory sensitivities. That’s why we’ve incorporated autism-friendly rooms to ensure a comfortable and supportive environment.

In partnership with the University of Miami-Nova Southeastern University Center for Autism and Related Disabilities (UM-NSU CARD), our Pediatric Emergency Departments have achieved an autism-friendly designation. Our emergency department staff completed special autism sensory-friendly training and will continue to receive ongoing education, as well as support from our partners at UM-NSU CARD, to maintain the highest level of care for our patients.

To ensure a seamless experience in our autism-friendly EDs, we recommend the following steps:

  1. Download this helpful PDF prior to visiting one of our locations.
  2. Upon arrival at the ED, inform the front desk staff that you require sensory-friendly special accommodations.
  3. If available, our staff will guide you and your child to the designated sensory-friendly exam room.
  4. For non-emergency conditions, consider utilizing our UHealth Jackson Urgent Care centers, also autism-friendly, as a more suitable alternative.
