How to Prepare for an MRI

Accordion

Here are some simple ways to describe the test in a child-friendly way:

  • “An MRI is a big camera shaped like a donut that takes pictures of the inside of your body.”
  • “The machine is very loud, like a construction zone, but it won’t touch or move you.”
  • “Your job is to stay as still as possible so your pictures don’t come out blurry.”

  • Have your child lie still on the couch to simulate the experience.
  • Bang pots and pans to mimic the MRI sounds, or play a recording of MRI noises.
  • If you have a pop-up play tunnel, encourage your child to lie still inside it.
  • Show them pictures of an MRI machine so they know what to expect.

Helpful resources:

  • Consider books like The Donut That Roared to make the experience more relatable.

Empowering children with small choices can reduce anxiety:

  • Let them choose their favorite music to listen to during the MRI.
  • Allow them to pick comfortable, metal-free clothing (for example, sweatpants and a t-shirt).
  • Older girls can wear sports bras without metal clasps.
