Preparing Your Child for a Radiology Visit
Preparing Your Child for a Radiology Visit
Explain the Procedure in Simple Terms
- Avoid complex medical terms and describe what they will see, hear, and feel during the test.
- Show them pictures or videos of the equipment so they know what to expect.
When to Talk About the Procedure
- Toddlers: A day before the appointment
- Preschoolers: Three to five days before
- School-age children: One week before
- Teenagers: As soon as the test is scheduled
Practice Staying Still
- Encourage your child to practice lying still by making it a fun game.
- Try counting, singing, or deep breathing exercises together.
- Build a cozy play area at home with blankets and pillows to practice being in a small space.
Pack a Comfort Bag
- Bring their favorite blanket, stuffed animal, book, or tablet (with charger).
- Eye masks or noise-canceling headphones can help reduce anxiety.
Dress Comfortably
- Choose loose, easy-to-remove clothing in case they need to change into a hospital gown.
- Avoid metal items like zippers, hairpins, and jewelry, which may interfere with imaging.
How to Prepare for an MRI
Accordion
Here are some simple ways to describe the test in a child-friendly way:
- “An MRI is a big camera shaped like a donut that takes pictures of the inside of your body.”
- “The machine is very loud, like a construction zone, but it won’t touch or move you.”
- “Your job is to stay as still as possible so your pictures don’t come out blurry.”
- Have your child lie still on the couch to simulate the experience.
- Bang pots and pans to mimic the MRI sounds, or play a recording of MRI noises.
- If you have a pop-up play tunnel, encourage your child to lie still inside it.
- Show them pictures of an MRI machine so they know what to expect.
Helpful resources:
- Consider books like The Donut That Roared to make the experience more relatable.
Empowering children with small choices can reduce anxiety:
- Let them choose their favorite music to listen to during the MRI.
- Allow them to pick comfortable, metal-free clothing (for example, sweatpants and a t-shirt).
- Older girls can wear sports bras without metal clasps.
