Motility and Abdominal Pain Care
Some children have problems with how food moves through the digestive system. This is called a motility disorder. When the muscles or nerves don’t work the right way, it can cause some of these symptoms:
- Trouble swallowing or choking
- Vomiting or gagging
- Stomach pain or swelling
- Constipation or diarrhea
- Accidents
- Poor growth or weight loss
Our motility and abdominal pain program offers special testing and treatment for these conditions.
Testing and Treatment
Tests may include:
- Manometry (measures how the gut muscles work)
- pH study (checks for acid reflux)
- Gastric emptying study (checks how fast the stomach empties)
Treatments may include:
- Botulinum toxin injections (to relax muscles)
- Balloon dilation (to open narrow areas)
- Biofeedback (to improve muscle control)
- Antegrade continence enema (ACE) surgery (helps with severe constipation)
