Pediatric Cardiac Intensive Care Unit

The pediatric cardiac intensive care unit (CICU) offers the highest level of care is given to infants, children, and young adults undergoing treatment for a variety of heart conditions. The CICU is staffed by a team of dedicated UHealth – University of Miami Health System pediatric cardiac intensivists, pediatric cardiologists, and nurse specialists trained in providing intensive care and cardiac specialty services to patients before and after heart surgery, or with medical illness including extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO).

The CICU not only provides the best medical care for sick children, but it also accommodates the needs of families and loved ones who are caring for them. The unit has private, comfortable rooms where parents or guardians are welcome to stay with their children, allowing them to play an active role in their treatment and recovery.

This unique and centralized environment optimizes daily interactions and care for our patients and their families. Our family-centered spaces include recreational areas, a computer lab, shower facilities, and a quiet room for parents to talk or discuss treatment options with their child’s physician.

The CICU is equipped with:

  • Two operating rooms, specifically designed for pediatric cardiac surgeries
  • State-of-the-art monitoring equipment
  • Cardiac catheterization lab, specifically designed for pediatric patients

Pediatric Transport to Holtz Children’s Hospital

If a child requires immediate cardiac care, we offer quick and efficient transport. Our team is committed to fast dispatch times and clear and easy communication with our partners at the referring facilities. When arranging for a patient’s transport, our communications specialist will ask for the following information:
  • Patient’s Name
  • Age and Weight
  • Type and Extent of Illness or Injury
  • Vital Signs
  • Treatment Received
  • Referral Physician’s Name and Contact Information
